07 Lean and Culture

Why do so many companies fail with introducing Lean – and others don’t? How can Lean and a Continuous Improvement Process be firmly rooted within the enterprise?

In order to be able to work and live Lean on a daily basis, the corporate culture has to
be changed fundamentally. That is why we have dedicated the Huppertz Report 07 to the question of “Lean & Culture”. The current edition describes what had to be done to create and implement our very own “Lean” corporate philosophy.

The comprehension of Lean methods and tools is by far not sufficient to be
successfully sustainable. Lean has to be fully understood and not merely copied. It is also fundamental to consider cultural circumstances and requirements. Long-term success can only be achieved, if thinking outside the box is always possible, if the fun
to experiment remains and other successful methods that fit into the lean philosophy can be integrated. Then a true shift in awareness can take place in the company. It’s all about the mindset of each and every employee and especially about the mindset and the behavior of the management.

Anja Huppertz, CCO, states: “Corporate culture is defined by the behavior of those people who are the main mental leaders.”
